     Frequently Asked Questions & General Information
      Carpets

There are important questions you need to ask yourself when choosing a carpet for your home. You want a floor covering that not only looks and feels good, but meets the requirements of the area you are carpeting. Remember to raise these questions with the salesperson helping you:

Which area in my home am I carpeting?
Your new carpet must suit the area you're covering. High traffic areas like entrance halls need durable carpets with patterns or textures to hide soiling between cleanings. Softer carpets suit bedrooms or bathrooms where comfort is more important.

What colour carpet should I choose?
Your choice of carpet colour and texture will affect the personality of the room. Bear the following in mind:
Natural colour carpets go with all shades of paint. Lighter carpets or flooring create an open airy feel; darker shades make a room seem smaller and cosier. Plain or lighter colours are best suited for rooms where soiling is less prevalent. Textured and multi-coloured carpets should be used in high traffic areas and areas adjacent to external doors, to hide dirt.

Which carpet style is best for my needs?

Cut Pile: Plush, soft and comfortable underfoot. Best suited to lower traffic areas like bedrooms or lounges.
Twist: A soft, casual construction that has longer cut pile fibres twisted in a 'frieze' style. Perfect for bedrooms.
Loop Pile: A durable carpet suitable for all areas. The tight, pebbly surface makes cleaning easy and features enhanced dirt hiding properties.
Needle Punch: A hardwearing style popular for heavy traffic areas like halls and stairways.

Carpet care tips
To keep your floor coverings looking clean and beautiful, it's best to follow a simple, regular maintenance programme, while also introducing some basic preventative measures.

Regular Maintenance Tips
Vacuum regularly: The most important routine in caring for your carpet. It prevents dust build-up and damage from hard particles.
Steam clean periodically: The frequency will depend on the amount of traffic and soiling - normally every year or two we recommend that you call in a professional.
Remove spots and spills immediately: It's advisable to always have spot and stain removal products on hand for use during cleaning emergencies.

Before cleaning find out exactly what has been spilt and what fibre the carpet is made from. Use small quantities of the right shampoo or chemicals to avoid over wetting the carpet and work the stain from the edge inwards to prevent it spreading. Blot the carpet pile, rather than rubbing it. Rinse the treated area with clean water and blot out any excess. Avoid walking on the damp area to prevent quick re-soiling.

Preventative Maintenance Tips

   *
Move heavy furniture occasionally to minimise pile crushing and change traffic patterns in a room
   *  Use walk-off mats at all entrances and clean them often
   *  Use castor protectors or carpet off-cuts under heavy furniture
   *  Protect your carpet from prolonged periods of direct sunlight, with blinds or curtains
   *  Avoid using household chemicals, medicines and cosmetics over your carpet - they can permanently stain or bleach your carpet.

How to Install Carpet

   *  Collect the following: tackless strips, stapler, hammer, utility knife or carpet knife, chalk line, measuring tape, knee kicker, power
   *  stretcher, seam cutter, wall trimmer, stair tool, seam tape, seam iron, work gloves and safety glasses.
   *  Prepare the room by making sure the floor is clean and clear of anything that might create a lump in your new carpeting (old staples,
   *  etc). It's also a good idea to take off the doors so it will be easier to move the carpet into the room.
   *  Install tackless strips around the perimeter of the room (except in front of doorways) 15mm from the wall. Be sure the strips meet at the
   *  corners and the tacks are pointing towards the wall.
   *  Install your carpet underlay in strips and staple it in place. Butt the edges of the underlay together (don't overlap them). Trim away the
   *  excess underlay along the inside edge of the tackless strips, ensuring the tacks are exposed.
   *  Measure your room at its longest point and add at least 100mm to that measurement.
   *  Layout your carpet (outside or on a garage floor) where you have room to work, and mark the back of the carpet on both edges with
   *  your room measurement.
   *  Use a chalk line to join the two marks and then with a utility or carpet knife cut the carpet to length (cut from the backside).
   *  Bring the carpet into the room, roll it out and "dry fit" it.
   *  If your room is wide enough to need another piece of carpet, follow the same process, measure, layout, mark and trim, then bring the
   *  carpet into the room and place so it overlaps the existing piece by about 50mm. Be sure the grain of the carpet is running the same
   *  way.
   *  Use a seam cutter to cut through both pieces of carpet (at the same time). This will ensure you have edges that line.
   *  Cut a piece of seaming tape and center it under the two pieces of carpet, adhesive side up.
   *  Heat the seam iron to temperature and run it slowly along the seam, allowing the adhesive to melt and join the edges. Put some weight
   *  onto the seam until the adhesive has dried.
   *  Attach the carpet to the tackless strips by placing the knee kicker about 3 inches from the wall and driving your knee forcefully into the
   *  padded end. This will stretch the carpet over the tackless strip that will grab and hold it in place.
   *  Trim along the wall with an edge trimmer (cuts through the carpet right at the wall).
   *  Attach the carpet on the opposite side of the room using the power stretcher to fasten it to the tackless strips.
   *  Trim away any excess; then, using the stair tool tuck the carpet under the exposed skirting.
   *  Trim the carpet at the doorway, install a door edge and install the door moulding.
